1. Family separations and the deaths of migrant kids
In 2016, Trump built his campaign on reducing unauthorized immigration, pledging to take a severe approach. He made sure to keep his promise when he took office, but the UN accused him of breaking international law and committing human rights violations.
Sadly, the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” for undocumented border crossings separated at least 5,500 families, leaving children in cages (literally). At least six migrant kids died while in US custody, leading to widespread accusations regarding the conditions in detention facilities.
After widespread condemnation, Trump issued an executive order in 2018 to stop the family separations. Sadly, despite a federal judge ordering the administration to reunite all separated families, the devastating consequences had already begun.
