3. Damaging democracy
Trump undermined democratic ideals in many ways during his presidency. He attacked the media multiple times, making UN experts warn that Trump’s rhetoric increased the risk of violence against journalists.
He threatened to send combat troops to American cities, despite the objections of their elected leaders. The former president even authorized illegal actions like ordering poll workers to stop counting ballots.
Trump’s relentless spread of misinformation on a variety of topics, particularly the electoral process, led experts and historians to compare him to oppressive rulers like Benito Mussolini.
According to Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), a project that keeps track of democracy across the world, the US has become more autocratic while Trump was its president.
