Next, we should think about the aging infrastructure and the outdated drainage systems some cities have. Unfortunately, those play a huge role in preventing disasters, but we didn’t see the authorities do something about that.

Last but not least, a key factor is also represented by the extreme weather patterns which can immediately destroy a city with poor planning. Heavy rainfall, prolonged storms, and rapid snowmelt can immediately overwhelm unprepared cities.

Some cities have taken major steps to combat these risks, but others remain dangerously unprepared, leaving millions of residents at risk. Now, let’s explore which cities are most at risk and how we could protect them.

1. New Orleans

A lot of people consider New Orleans one of the most flood-prone cities in the United States. The city is built below sea level and is surrounded by water, so let’s say that its image as a flood-prone city is for good reason.

New Orleans relies heavily on levees and pumps to keep floodwaters at bay. However, in 2005 took place a devastating disaster that has proven these systems are not foolproof. Unfortunately, when levees failed due to the power of Hurricane Katrina, the city was covered in water, and 1,800 people lost their lives.

At present, the city is still vulnerable to hurricanes and rising sea levels, and as we saw earlier this year, even moderate storms can cause severe damage or flooding.

2. New York

New York is also one of the most vulnerable cities when it comes to major flooding. Its extensive coastline is densely packed in urban landscape and aging infrastructure. So, in case of extreme weather conditions, the city is less likely to resist.

The city’s weaknesses were seen in 2012, when Hurricane Sandy flooded subways, tunnels, and entire neighborhoods, causing billions in damages and displacing others.

Even though since 2012 New York has taken major steps to improve flood defenses, the city’s underground infrastructure remains at high risk.

3. Houston

Houston has experienced some of the most devastating floods in recent history, due to its geography and rapid urbanization. Even though the city has made efforts to improve flood resilience, such as expanding green spaces to absorb excess water and constructing better drainage infrastructure, critics argue that more aggressive action is needed.

Unfortunately, Houston residents are basically used to dealing with natural disasters. For them, flooding is not an occasional disaster, it’s an ongoing threat that requires preparedness.

4. Charleston

Charleston is known for its beauty and culture, but its charm comes with a huge problem: flooding. It is located on the coast and is highly susceptible to storm surges, rising sea levels, and heavy rainfall.

One of the biggest problems of this city is tidal flooding, which has dramatically increased over the past few decades. Residents have serious issues and face higher flood insurance costs, and some areas are becoming increasingly difficult to insure altogether.

5. Miami

You surely heard about sunny-day flooding. Well, it’s becoming more and more common. Streets in areas like Miami Beach frequently flood even when there is no rain, making it clear that the city is already feeling the effects of climate change.
