According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons (NamUs) data, there are more than 600,000 missing persons annually. Around 4,400 unidentified bodies are found each year. Nationwide, there are around 6.5 people going missing for every 100,000 people.
Luckily, the majority of missing person cases end up being resolved. For instance, in 2021, 485,000 out of a total of 521,705 reported missing person cases were solved within the year.
Also, the number of missing person cases has steadily fallen since 1997, when more than 800,000 people were reported missing. This is mainly due to the fact that in the past two decades, communication has evolved, making it easier to track and stay in touch with people.
Still, more than 14,000 unidentified body cases and 20,000 missing person cases remain open.
