The sinking of the Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 is unquestionably the most famous maritime disaster of all time. The loss of over 1500 (119 of them being American) souls that day has left an indelible mark on the minds of many, so much so, that we are still discussing the tragedy to this day.
And while it might go down as the worst, and certainly most memorable maritime disaster of all time, it is far from the only one. It is clearly impossible to know just how many crafts perished in the waters of the world since sailing began, however, there have been some disasters at sea, while not as famous as the titular Titanic, which was no less tragic for the massive loss of life they also suffered.
