Billions of smartphone owners have become amateur photographers as a result of the invention and improvement of smartphones’ front and rear cameras. On top of that, it has generated a new trend — selfies — resulting in an increased number of selfie photographers.
This selfie craze, however, has brought to light a new kind of death, the one when you’re too busy taking a photo of yourself to see that you’re about to be in a life-threatening situation. Even though this form of death hasn’t been recognized as an official cause of death, our world is seeing a growth of selfie deaths, especially among young people.
A study actually found that 259 people died in 137 incidents between 2011 to 2017. India is on top of the pack having the most selfie deaths. Russia owns a gloomy second place followed by the US and Pakistan.
According to the researchers, transport, falls, and drowning were the most frequently reported causes of selfie-related deaths. They also discovered that men are three times more inclined to engage in dangerous behaviors when capturing a selfie.
