7. Cirrus Clouds

Your first indicator that a severe weather change is on its way in the next 12 to 48 hours is to look out for cirrus clouds. They are often confused with cirrus clouds caused by condensation trails left by high-flying jet planes. These form above 20,000 feet in the atmosphere and have a wispy appearance.

These thin and feather-like clouds, often compared to a curling lock of hair or ringlets, are composed of ice crystals originating from the freezing of supercooled water droplets. They can come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are good indicators of which way the winds are blowing.
