Cyclone Nargis

Cyclone Nargis was one of the most impressive and deadly natural disasters in the entire history of Myanmar. It occurred in early May 2008. On Friday, May 2, the unexpected cyclone created landfall in Myanmar, which delivered a storm rush of 40 kilometers up the Irrawaddy Delta.

The cyclone led to devastating destructions and a minimum of 138,000 deaths. The Labutta Township declared 80,500 deaths, with 10,000 more declared deaths in Bogale. There had been around 55,000 individuals that were missing, plus many other victims found in other towns and regions.

Even if the Myanmar government’s official death toll might have been incorrect, there were strong accusations that authorities might have halted updating the numbers right after 138,000, so they can reduce a political fallout.
