9. 1932 – The Deep South Tornado Outbreak
Over just 13 hours between March 21–22, 1932, the Deep South would be struck with at least 38 tornadoes, including 27 killers and several long-lived tornado families. The Tornadoes would cut a swath of death and destruction from Mississippi north to Illinois and east to South Carolina, but Alabama would be hit the hardest.
Out of the 330 people killed in total, 268 of those fatalities would occur in Alabama as out of the 38 tornadoes, 10 would be extremely violent, with 8 of those hitting the Yellowhammer State, making it the deadliest ever in that U.S. state. In total, it would injure 2,141 people and cause $4.34 million in damages, around $82,322,000 in today’s money.
