7. 2011 – The 2011 Super Outbreak
If the 1974 tornado outbreak earned its status of a ‘Super Outbreak,’ the catastrophic events that took place between April 25–28, 2011, would certainly warrant the same name as it was the largest, costliest, and one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks ever recorded. The Southern, Midwestern, and Northeastern United States felt its full fury as a total of 360 tornadoes were confirmed in 21 states from Texas to New York to southern Canada.
The most active day was on April 27, with a record 216 tornadoes touching down that day from midnight to midnight, with four of the tornadoes being rated EF5, which is the highest-ranking on the Enhanced Fujita scale. Over the three days of destruction, it would injure more than 3100 people and claim the lives of 324. It has gone down as the costliest on record for a tornado outbreak with a price tag of over $10.2 billion (2011 USD).
