12. Halyna Hutchins
Although not widely known to the public before her tragic death, our last entry not only made headlines across the globe, but her killing could be a catalyst for gun safety reform on film sets. Born in 1979 in Horodets, Zhytomyr Oblast, USSR, but grew up in the Russian city of Murmansk, where she grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle.
After graduating with a degree in international journalism and working on documentary films as an investigative journalist, she would move to Los Angeles to focus on filmmaking by taking on roles in production and fashion photography. She would eventually turn her attention to cinematography. By 2018, she was one of the first eight female cinematographers participating in the Fox DP Lab program, a program that provides greater opportunities for women cinematographers.
Sadly, just three years later, on October 21, 2021, while working as the director of photography on the set of the Western film ‘Rust,’ Hutchins would be accidentally shot dead by actor Alec Baldwin after he discharged a gun used as a prop that somehow contained a live round. The investigation is still ongoing.

the safety protocols on set are fine, they were all broken that day Halyna Hutchins died. What needs to happen is an investigation as to who brought live rounds on set.
