Martin Luther King
The most famous and one of the best civil rights icons, Martin Luther King, stood for more than just African American rights. And his death would send shockwaves around the world that are still felt today. As the leader of the Civil Rights Movement in our country, MLK met with a lot of opposition and anger in his career, including a stabbing in 1958 that almost killed him. And sadly, he even received violent threats on a regular basis.
It’s been said that after hearing about John F. Kennedyโs assassination back in 1963, King told his wife that he believed he would die this way as well. Unfortunately, he was right. MLK was fatally shot on the balcony of a hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968. His assassin, James Earl Ray, originally pled guilty to the murder charge but later changed his mind.
Many people, including Kingโs family, believe to this day that the government or the mafia planned his assassination to silence him.
