As the idealistic Lee cedes his role as message runner to Gibson, he spares him the coming catastrophic offensive known as the Battle of the Nek. Realizing his friend is about to undertake a certain suicide mission and now with orders in his hand to cancel the charge, Gibson runs for his life to stop the assault.
When he hears the whistle signaling the men to attack, the screams of pain and anguish pouring out of Gibson will cut to the heart of the toughest of men. However, it is the final image of Lee running across the battlefield that has the most lasting impact, as the camera freeze frames him the second enemy bullets tear into his chest.
