Already set in one of the bleakest periods in American history, The Great Depression, this 1969 Sydney Pollack directed film, based on Horace McCoy’s 1935 novel, lures its audience in with a sprinkling of hope as our two down on their luck protagonist have a chance to win some big money.
If Gloria (played by Jane Fonda) and Robert (played by Michael Sarrazin) can be the last couple standing in a dance marathon, they can bag themselves a cool $1,500 in silver dollars (around 30 grand in today’s money) and escape their life of misery and poverty, with Robert dreaming of becoming a great film director.
