While we know now more about the dangers asteroids might pose to humanity, they are, after all, thought to have contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Only recent research has made us understand more about the large host of space rocks in our solar system, that could pose some danger.
We are at the starting point of envisaging and developing systems that will protect us against some of the smaller asteroids that could one day hit us.
However, against the ones that are even bigger and rarer, we are, in fact, helpless.
While they wouldn’t always destroy Earth or make it uninhabitable, they might wipe out humanity by causing big tsunamis, fires, and many other natural disasters.
