1. Hiroshima – Japan
The United States infamously dropped the first atomic weapon used in warfare on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, killing tens of thousands and laying waste to a city that was founded in 1598 as a castle town on the ลta River delta. The region where the city stands today started a small fishing village along the shores of Hiroshima Bay in the 12th century but soon became a thriving and prosperous trading hub.
However, it would be when the powerful warlord Mลri Terumoto ordered the construction of Hiroshima Castle (sometimes known as Carp Castle) in an area called Gokamura, meaning “five villages” in 1588, the town would be named Hiroshima as soon as the first stones began to be laid. Following the Meiji Restoration, the return of practical imperial rule under Emperor Meiji, in 1868, Hiroshima rapidly transformed into an important urban center and industrial hub, gaining its official status as a city in 1889.
