2. Aleppo – Syria
Lying on the left bank of Queiq River and founded as Halab in around 4,300 BC, Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The importance of Aleppo has been significant for centuries as it was located at one end of trade routes connecting the East and West, famously known as the Silk Road.
Sadly, the city has its fair share of conflicts long before the civil war it currently has to contend with due to its strategic location. Known in antiquity as Khalpe, Khalibon, and Beroea (Veroea), everyone from the Hittites to the Assyrians, Greeks, and Persians had control of the city. Unfortunately, after the opening of the Suez Canal in November 1869, the city saw a decline in its importance.
