7. Sarajevo – Bosnia and Herzegovina
Situated along the Miljacka River in the heart of the Balkans and surrounded by the Dinaric Alps, the area Sarajevo is located in would be settled by the Romans, Goths, and then the Slavs in the 7th century. By the middle ages, it became part of the Bosnian province of Vrhbosna near the traditional center of the Kingdom of Bosnia.
The actual founding of the city of Sarajevo would come when the Ottoman Empire conquered the region in the 1450s, with 1461 being recognized as the official founding date. In 1878, the city (and the rest of Bosnia-Herzegovina) were annexed to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Unfortunately, just 42 years later, the heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, would be assassinated, sparking the First World War.
