Hurricane Irma (2017), $53.5 billion in damage
At first, Irma directed its entire wrath on two of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John and St. Thomas, devastating both while it was still a Category 5 storm. It started to weaken to a Category 4 only when it made landfall at Cudjoe Key, Fla., back in September 2017.
The Florida Keys were destroyed, with 25% of buildings completely wrecked and 65% severely damaged. Wind and storm-surge damage took place along the coasts of Florida and South Carolina, as Jacksonville experienced probably the worst flooding in more than 200 years.
Irma kept its maximum sustained wind of 185 mph for 37 hours straight, which is the longest record in the era of satellite observation.

We were made aware that the government was going to arrange for the people to pay this instead of the insurance companies. I wonder how many people were listeining when the info was released in the 90s. This happened when there was alot of hurricaines, and hotels were toppling over like dominoes. it was said that this is a lot for fema to handle.
