Redoubt Volcano, Alaska

The first image that would come to mind when one thinks of the state of Alaska would be snowy mountains and forests, not active volcanoes and eruptions. Yet, the Redoubt Volcano is very active and known to be quite naughty when it comes to eruptions. In the last over 100 years, this volcano has erupted several times, with the most notable ones being in 1902, 1966, 1989 through 1990, and most recently in 2009.

With how active this volcano is, it is no wonder that the people who live around it are scared of what could happen if it were to erupt again, especially since there has been some time since the last one. The most vulnerable communities are four towns and villages about 50 miles away, as well as Anchorage, which is about 108 miles away.

It may not sound like the volcano is that impressive compared to others, but it is one mighty one. It emitted around 23 major explosions in a five-month period in 1989 and 1990, catching a plane in an ash cloud as well because it was passing by at the time of the explosion. Thankfully, nothing happened and the plane landed safely, but with how unpredictable volcanoes are, we can never know when it will erupt again.
