#3 2012’s Sandy Superstorm
Despite storm Sandy coming in towards the New York Metropolitan area being categorized as a hurricane, by the time it hit the city, it had thankfully been downgraded to a superstorm. Yet, this doesn’t mean that it was less of a struggle for the people living there, as it still caused 233 fatalities, and it has been named the costliest superstorm in U.S. history up to date: $88.4 billion.
Not only had the subway system been completely overrun by the massive amounts of water, but there had been multiple houses destroyed in the New Jersey area, including multi-million dollar ones, which just serves to show that no matter how wealthy you are, tragedy strikes everyone.
The silver linings of this natural disaster had been seen in the fact that the municipality hadn’t treated the loss of life and danger of such storms passing as a one-time event, but rather it raised the urgency of preparing for them. Due to climate change, they are expecting others to hit, so after the flood, they started to reinforce the shoreline defenses on the New Jersey shores.
