2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami
Tohoku earthquake hit Japan with a magnitude of 9.0 on 11 March 2011, at 14:46 local time (05:46 UTC). Its epicenter had been 70 kilometers east of the Tohoku coastline, and its underwater depth was 30km. The earthquake was then followed by a tsunami with waves as high as 40 meters. According to Japan’s National Law Enforcement Company, there have been 15,889 deaths.
Almost 6,152 people were injured, and over 2,600 were declared missing. A great number of buildings collapsed completely. From all of the earthquakes that ever hit the region, this was probably the most effective, and also the fourth most prevailing in the global world, since 1900.
Naturally (or not), the tsunami triggered nuclear accidents. We’re talking here about level 7 meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex.
