3. Willian McKinley

Quickly after he gave a speech in Buffalo on September 6th, 1901, McKinley, the 25th president of America, was shot. A man opened fire at point-blank range, striking him twice in the chest as he shook hands with people going through a reception line.

Even though McKinley’s doctors anticipated his recovery, gangrene eventually developed around the gunshot wounds. He died on September 14th, 1901, six months after he began his second term, and was succeeded by Vice President Theodore Roosevelt.

Shortly after the politician’s death, 28-year-old Detroit native Leon F. Czolgosz confessed he was the shooter. He was found guilty at trial and was executed on October 29th, 1901, using an electric chair.
