1. Kennesaw, Georgia, has an unusual law
We’ve previously said that each state has its own rules regarding gun laws, but the city of Kennesaw, Georgia, took it to the next level and came up with its own regulations.
They have a law on the books imposing that every head of the family in the city limits is required to own a gun. This law was passed in 1982 as a response to a gun ban in the village of Morton Grove, Illinois. Since this event, a few towns have passed similar laws.
However, the law isn’t exactly very clear and specific, so you should probably consult an official to better understand it and make sure that you stay within the law’s guidance.
2. FBI background checks
Did you know that the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 imposed a waiting period of 5 days before an unlicensed individual could purchase a gun? That waiting period was actually a short window for the FBI to perform a background check.
This law was named for the former White House press secretary James Brady, who was shot in the head in 1981 by 25-year-old John Hinckley Jr., a man who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan so he could impress actress Jodie Foster, whom he was obsessed with.
Even though his brain cavity was shattered by the bullet, he survived, but he was left with slurred speech and partial paralysis that required him to always use a wheelchair.
3. 8 states assault weapon bans
The District of Columbia and 7 states have downright bans on the sale and purchase of assault weapons, while the states of Virginia and Minnesota have different regulations in place.
Before a federal 10-year ban was authorized with the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, Connecticut, California, and New Jersey put bans into effect. Other states, like Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Hawaii, have similar laws.
4. What happened on the East Coast
In the Northeast parts of America, there are some rigorous gun laws on the books, so it’s not a surprise that the states that have the fewest gun owners and federal licenses delivered lie along the Atlantic.
Speaking of that, Vermont, Maine, Delaware, and Rhode Island are some of the states that will have the fewest federal licenses issued in 2021, while Massachusetts and New Jersey have the lowest rates of gun ownership, closely followed by Rhode Island.
