But what are COVID-19 variants? It is in a virus’s nature to change and evolve over time. That’s the way they are working. These changes take place when the virus is transmitted between people. At some point, the virus becomes so different from the original that the new form is called a “variant.”
In order to identify these variants, researchers have to gather genetic material and map it. This is called sequencing. During this intervention, scientists look for the differences between the original and the variants, or even between more variants, and try to identify how they changed.
SARS-CoV-2 is a virus that spread all around the world, and this only helped it to move around, increasing the number of variants.
