Charleston, South Carolina 1886
Now we go back in time to talk about an event that was considered to be the strongest and biggest earthquake that happened in North America in the 19th century. A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Coastal Plain near Charleston, South Carolina, on August 31st, 1886.
The quake was short but vigorous, and in the roughly 60 seconds that it lasted, it managed to kill 60 people and cause serious and large-scale catastrophes to the city. Given the fact that the earthquake took place before there was any seismological instrumentation, much of the information concerning the earthquake comes from a USGS report from 1889.
…The next one is one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in North America!ย
