1. Keys

Divers discovered some keys on the board of the ship, but those keys weren’t any old and random ones. They were actually used by crewman Samuel Hemming during the terrible sinking to open a door, behind which there was a stock of lifeboat lanterns waiting to be used.

We can say that these keys are a piece of history because they were used in the last hours of those desperate times when people were afraid for their lives and asked themselves if they were going to see their families ever again.

Hemming got a personal order from Captain Edward J. Smith during the sinking, and it became apparent that things were bad enough, so he needed to make sure that all of the lifeboats had lamps.

2. Whistle

Another thing that was found on the Titanic was a whistle that belonged to a hero officer. According to different sources, the whistle belonged to Harold Lower, a fifth officer who commanded lifeboat number 14. He was considered a hero because he decided to come back to the icy waters and save four people who were still alive.

Lowe was one of the four officers who survived the sinking, and one of his possessions was a whistle engraved with “Lieut. H.G. Lowe RNR”, RNR meaning Royal Naval Reserve.

3. Violin

While an old and rusty violing found on the wreckage of the giant ship isn’t primarily shocking, the story behind it surely is. Experts say that the violin belonged to bandleader Wallace Hartley, who played “Nearer, My God, to Thee” as the ship sank. Sources say that the band kept playing during the devastating disaster, so we can indeed say that the violin was a piece of history.

Speaking of, the damaged musical instrument was found in the attic of a house in the United Kingdom in 2006. As Henry Aldridge and Son, those who hosted the auction in Wiltshire, UK, said, experts authenticated it with the help of different tests of saltwater deposits.

Moreover, experts explained that the instrument was embellished with an engraved silver plate that connected it to Wallace Hartley. In 2013, the violin was sold at a UK auction for $1.7 million, the highest amount of money ever paid for a Titanic antiquity.

  1. Titanic still lives with us today, even those who point fingers to blame, the impossible became possible , when you challenge the God above you will lose every time, the Holy one put that ship on the bottom of the ocean for everyone to see & he done it with the act of nature,,,,,
    BELIEVE<<<<<<<

  2. Pretty Damn amazing ! Truly unbelievable.
    Such a mighty ship.
You would have thought they would have had some kind of “Headlights ” or “Searchlights ” mounted on the front of the ship for Night Travel.. Makes sense to me.
Can’t think of everything. What a horrible night ! Can’t imagine the fear in the perishing passengers.

  3. Very interesting facts!
What is most suprising were the perfume oils that lasted after years of being in the water! Nice article, but such an unfortunate outcome for so many people. Even after all these years including the more recent tragic deaths that resulted from the Titan submerge, there is just something about the Titanic that continues to keep drawing us in….it was such a beautiful, majestic ship, and there will never be another like it.

    1. The movies A Night to Remember (1958) & TITANIC have done much to draw in people who are so enthralled with this historic disaster.

  4. Alison Leigh Abbott

This was very interesting. My son and I, especially my son, has been fascinated with the Titanic since he heard about it. Depicted, of course, by the movie. He was 7 when we saw that movie. Today, he is 35 and he has models, books, and several other items pertaining to this ship of this era. I will tell him about it.

  5. Great and intriguing article and I was riveted! Wow, the violin which played Nearer My God To Thee in particular blew my mind! Thanks for this! ๐Ÿ‘

  7. Iโ€™ve always been intrigued by the Titanic. The first time I watched the first movie I was hooked. But it also scared me to death. Then when I went on my first cruise I was also hooked & have been cruising ever since. Love the story & now the 6 things they found are amazing.

  8. These discoveries were certainly amazing. Having seen the movie when it came out, I had to read this article to learn the details that were actually discovered in later years. Thank you for publishing this!
