Hawaii
Hawaii has two active volcanoes: Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Between 1974 and 2003, the Aloha State had about 1,533 strong earthquakes. The one from 1868 was the largest in the history of Hawaii, with a magnitude of 7.9. The massive shock occurred on April 2, 1868, and caused a landslide and a tsunami in the island state of Hawaii. Most earthquakes here result from magma moving within the volcanoes and under the earth’s surface.
The largest mudslide was around 9 meters thick and 3 kilometers wide, while the tsunami flooded the land to a depth of around 1.5 meters.
Nevada
Between 1974 and 2003, there have been 788 severe earthquakes in Nevada. Active earthquake faults can be found almost everywhere in the state. It’s estimated that areas within 30 miles of Las Vegas have a 12% risk of getting an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 within the following 50 years.
One of the most devastating earthquakes that occurred in Nevada was in Pleasant Valley on May 19, 1915. It had a magnitude of 7.1 and seriously altered the flow of springs and streams in the northern part of the state.
