Superstorm Sandy Hit East Coast, 2012

Sandy caused a record storm surge in New York City, but also in Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and Bridgeport, Connecticut. In fact, some of the highest winds were registered in an area that stretched from western North Carolina to Ohio and New England.

Over 159 people were killed, and around 8.6 million customers were left without power. Hurricane Sandy eventually merged with a storm, causing even more damage with snow, wind, and rain, but also forcing the New York Stock Exchange to close for two days in a row, something that never happened since the major winter storm in 1888.
