6. John F. Kennedy

This is probably one of the most popular events in the entire history of America, and for good reason. Kennedy was visiting Dallas in November 1963 with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy when he was shot and killed by a covert assassin carrying a powerful rifle. As his motorcade passed past Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas, gunfire broke out.

He was shot in the head and passed away shortly after being taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital. President Lyndon B. Johnson took over as his successor after being sworn in in an Air Force One conference room. He’s the only leader of the country to take the oath of office on an airplane.

A few hours after the assassination, the police discovered Lee Harvey Oswald’s sniper’s vantage point in a nearby building, the Texas School Book Depository. Two days later, Jack Ruby, the proprietor of a Dallas nightclub, stormed forward and fatally shot Oswald as he was being transported from police headquarters to the county prison.
