In 2016, the Global Slavery Index calculated 45.8 million enslaved individuals in 167 countries. What’s worse is that one in four victims are children. And many modern-day slavery locations lack laws that directly criminalize and punish ownership or control over another individual, according to the Antislavery in Domestic Legislation database.
Modern slavery can be hard to recognize and detect in many cases. That’s because slavery has moved underground in most countries, and the definition of the term has expanded and evolved over the past several decades.

AGREED! 100% true. Try working since 16 part-time two years and going into full-time at 18 and trying to retire after 45 years of work. The social secirity administration workers are trained to hold up your applications until you die. They laugh on the phone stating that it takes 60-90 days to process an application, as though that’s a goal to be proud of. Such a lack of caring or empathy. All this while the very top government leaders live in million dollar homes, have security around the clock, get the best in pay and benefits while the very people who pay taxes or get them elected struggle every single day of their lives until death.

It seems you’ve got an underlying belief that your problems aren’t being addressed because you are white American. I am in 100 percent agreement with you. I had said all alone to different people, our government has us in slavery ever since I can remember by deception instead of force. We often vote against our own best interest by thinking the government is our mommy and we need a teet to suck on. Maybe you needed to have a career in life where you can get more money and enjoy vacations every year. I enjoyed vacations since I’ve been working even when I was a single mom we went on vacation. Now I’m retired and still go places when I can. It might not be others fault but your own not to be able to go on vacations. Most countries have taxes and we are blessed to be able to pay necessary things with those taxes. Some countries have a lot more taxes and their percentage is higher than here, imagine only getting 50% of your salary and the other 50% for the government. Many countries take that much especially socialist countries where everything is ‘free’ for others, but is not really free because the workers are paying for all the benefits.

If you are American you live in a country that provides education for K-12 grades, you travel on paved roads, you have your mail delivered to your house, and if your house catches fire you have a fire department drive to your house and put the fire out, you have federal laws and people who enforce them. If you believe this to be real slavery, you have no idea the depth of true slavery. Granted it may be a form of slavery but doesn’t compare to slavery in its truest form. You do have the freedom to go about your day as you choose even though you don’t have the money to go to all of the places you would like. In fact, the US criminal justice in many ways promotes slavery with long sentences. There is little incentive to keep people away from carceration. And there are many financial incentives to keep it going.

You should include cruise ships. Wealthy, American owned cruise lines skirt Labour Laws by flagging their ships under Third World country flags. Thus, they are free to work their crew as long and as hard as they wish, taking advantage of folks from impoverished places. I know, I worked aboard several different major cruise ships as a musician. I had it easy, but most of my fellow crew members did not. While I only had to play maybe 4 sets of music a night, most crew were working long hours, 7 days a week. The ship confiscates all of the crew’s passports, and holds them until their contracts are completed. If a crew member gets sick of working such long hours, and never getting off the ship, too bad. They don’t have the freedom to quit, because the ship holds their passport. Family member at home needs you? Too bad. You haven’t finished your contract yet. You can go home in 6 months when your contract ends. Not before!
