Tornado Outbreak in South and East, 2011

Around 349 tornadoes devastated the South and East in only three days, killing 321 people and officially becoming the most expensive tornado in entire U.S. history, with $11.9 billion in damages. As much as 60% of the tornadoes (207) “landed” on April 27, hitting Mississippi, Alabama, northwest Georgia and Tennessee, out of which 15 were extreme.

On May 22, another strong EF5 tornado hit Joplin, Missouri, killing more than 161 people and reaching $3.1 billion in casualties.
