1. Nanci Griffith
Born on July 6, 1953, in Seguin, Texas, but raised in Austin, Nanci Caroline Griffith’s music career began while she was still working as a nursery teacher in Texas in the 1970s. Nanci’s debut album, ‘There’s a Light Beyond These Woods,’ was released in 1978, with a cover designed by her father. Her style encompassed a variety of musical genres, predominantly country, folk, and what she termed “folkabilly.”
She toured with or recorded a duet with almost everyone from the folk and country scene and would go on to win a Grammy Award for the album’ Other Voices, Other Rooms’ in 1994. Nanci had been fighting two different types of cancer for 25 years. Sadly, she would lose her battle on August 13, 2021.
