Indira Gandhi
Our last devastating death was the third Prime Minister of India and was the country’s only female leader. Unfortunately, she was a victim of religious tensions in the country. As a rather divisive figure, she was politically stubborn. So much so that she went to war over her support for the independence movement in East Pakistan, helping to create Bangladesh.
Her Sikh bodyguards ultimately assassinated her in 1984 after ordering military action in the Golden Temple at Amritsar, one of the most important sites for Sikhs. Indira’s passing resulted in violence against Sikh communities all across India, and an estimated 8,000 were murdered as part of this retribution.
