All the participants are so desperate to win the money that they are prepared to dance till they drop (and in some cases actually die). Upon learning that, due to undisclosed deductions, if they do win, they will win virtually nothing, the despondent and despairing couple leave the competition.
As they stand on a pier looking out to the ocean, Jane Fonda’s wholly defeated Gloria puts a gun to her head but can’t bring herself to pull the trigger. Instead, she begs her partner to do it for her, and he duly obliges. When questioned by the police as to why he would do such a thing, Michael Sarrazin delivers the haunting line, ‘They shoot horses, don’t they?’
