Six months into his term, President Garfield became the second American president to be killed. Charles Guiteau shot him on July 2nd, 1881, as he was making his way through a railroad station in Washington to catch a train to New England.
Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, tried to locate the bullet embedded in the president’s breast with the help of a tool he created especially for the president but didn’t succeed.
The American leader was severely wounded, and he was brought to the shores of New Jersey. Even after weeks of care and treatment, he was still wounded, and he passed away in September 1881. He was followed by Vice President Chester Arthur.
Almost a year later, in June 1882, the president’s killer, Charles Guiteau, was found guilty and executed.
