6. Whitney Houston
Born Whitney Elizabeth Houston on August 9, 1963, Houston began singing in church as a child and became a background vocalist while in high school before signing for Arista Records aged just 19. Known for her powerful and soulful vocals, she would go on to be one of the most awarded and best-selling recording artists of all time, having sold over 200 million records worldwide. Despite her girl next door image, Houston had many issues with substance abuse, and her marriage to singer Bobby Brown was contentious, to say the least.
On February 11, 2012, she was found unconscious in Suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, submerged in the bathtub. Although the Los Angeles County coroner’s office reported the cause of Houston’s death was drowning and the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use,” there are still many questions surrounding the 48-year-old’s death to this day.
