Year 1945: Atomic bombs and the worst year of the Holocaust
World War II is arguably a leading candidate for the darkest period in time. We consider this one of the worst years in history because it solely focuses on the deadliest global conflict.
So, in 1945 the US dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, which resulted in over 400,000 deaths and casualties. And during this same year, Tokyo saw 2,000 tons of incendiary bombs fall, resulting in 100,000 deaths of civilian people.
As if that wasn’t enough, the mass extermination of the Jewish population through the Holocaust killed roughly 6 million European Jews. And if you weren’t enraged by any of those numbers, the entire combat reduced the global population by a whopping 3%!
Hence, the estimated death toll was somewhere between 70 and 85 million people. Thus, one could easily understand why many people consider 1945 a top candidate for the worst year to be alive in human history…and we might have to agree with them.

While 6 million Jews were killed in Hitler’s concentration camps, overall 11 million people were killed in them. My Italian father-in-law who headed the resistance in his hometown in Northern Italy managed to survive.
