How serious is it?
In some areas, especially on the Big Bend coast, a hurricane landfall of such intensity hadn’t occurred in a very long time. It is believed that the region’s shallow continental shelf will add to the storm’s impact as the hurricane’s circulation is pushing water inland, which is leading to catastrophic storm surges.
Citizens expect to see not just the storm surge but also the potential for damaging winds extending well inland, all the way over big portions of north Florida and into southern Georgia, even in places like Savannah and Hilton Head. We have plenty of hurricane warnings in effect for the fast-moving hurricane.
Idalia’s path is expected to hit a wide central portion of Florida right before moving along the Georgia and Carolina coastlines. Tuesday evening, Governor DeSantis asked people located in the evacuation zone to leave as soon as they could. He also added that if they manage to find shelter for the night, the consequences won’t affect them that much.
Hurricane Idalia’s location and warnings
Idalia spent a couple of days churning toward the Florida coast from the Gulf of Mexico. The more the storm intensifies, the more meteorologists warn that it might bring “horrible” storm surges and “destructive winds” to the Big Bend region as it moves over land.
As Idalia is expected to weaken after landfall, the chances of it remaining on a hurricane level across southern Georgia and close to the coast of Georgia and southern South Carolina are still high. Idalia should emerge off the southeastern U.S. coast on Thursday morning and move eastward through late this week.
