1. Overcrowding and delay

As I’ve already said, if you live in a big city, it’s possible that the subway is going to be very, very crowded, especially at different hours when people go to work or come home from their job.

Unfortunately, the person who drives the train can’t keep track of all the people that come in there, so it’s hard to know exactly how full the cars are. In the month of April 2015, the subways in New York City were so full that almost 50,000 trains were delayed due to overcrowding.

…So imagine how many tired, angry, and hungry people were in there, waiting to get out and go on about their day!

2. Some of the passengers are… rats

As you probably know, rats are quite resistant creatures, and they don’t have a problem with crowded and sometimes dirty places and subway stations are no exception. According to different sources, in 2013, roughly 13% of the NYC subway stations were victims of rat infestations.

Of course, the bigger the city is, the more likely it is to have rats that are hungry and looking for food resources. However, it’s not that pleasant to wait for your train and notice a little rat waiting in line with you.

3. Thieves might try to do their job

If you thought that it was hard to steal a lady’s purse just when the subway is about to stop and then start running as fast as possible, it’s not. Many thieves know that the majority of people think that a person who’s running around in the station is probably trying to catch a train and be somewhere on time, and they’ll turn this thing into an opportunity.

According to various reports, there are approximately 6 felonies committed each day in the subway, with the majority of them involving theft. While the number is low and the chance of being a victim is rather small, do you really want to take the risk? Probably not.

So make sure you don’t keep your valuable things on display so everybody can see what you have and don’t fall asleep in the subway, because thieves are more likely to put their plan into action if they notice that you don’t pay attention, and you’re probably not even going to feel that they take something from you. Experts say that 1/3 of thefts happen when the victim is sleeping, so don’t forget that!
