4. Germs are everywhere

If you use public transportation a lot, you already know that all the seating and handles are dirty and full of germs and bacteria. You’re not going to see them, but they exist.

Given the fact that the subway is one of the most used forms of public transportation, thousands of people use it every day, which means that these items can’t be cleaned after someone uses them. So if you ride the subway, don’t forget to use hand sanitizer and wash your hands after you get off the train.

5. Terrorist attacks can happen

If you know something about terrorist attacks, you know that they typically happen in places that are crowded, so they can hurt multiple people at once. That includes airports, concerts, bridges, planes, huge buildings, and even subways. According to different sources, at least 20 known terrorist plots were discovered in NYC since the tragic 9/11 event.

How to be safe when riding the subway

There are a few basic rules you should follow so you can be safe when riding the subway:

  • avoid empty subway cars (they might be too hot or too cold, locals typically know that, but for tourists is hard to identify the reason);
  • stay back from the platform edge and whatever reason you might have, don’t lean or go onto the tracks;
  • don’t be afraid to call 911 in case of an emergency;
  • if someone has fallen onto the train tracks, call 911 urgently. If a train is coming, quickly turn on the flashlight on your phone and wave your arm from side to side;
  • make sure you keep your belongings close to you and if it’s possible, try not to use electronic devices so you don’t draw attention to them.
