Somalia

The first outburst of the ongoing Somali Civil War has been contested many times, even if multiple organizations, including the UN, declared it started in 1991. However, there are various experts who claim that it all started 10 years earlier.

In both cases, you can draw the line on how long this country had to face violence and insecurity, no matter how it’s been labeled. Despite many ongoing crises in Somalia, the violence and brutality that have come along with the conflict are the two main reasons why this population suffers so much.

Even so, it seems that civilian casualties aren’t the biggest killer. After 30 years of ongoing instability, the country’s health system and failing infrastructure left 7.7 million people in need of humanitarian aid. Out of all these people, 5 million are children.

Enormous portions of the country aren’t under government control. According to Abdi Rashid Haji-Nur, “operationally, it’s very difficult for national and international humanitarian agencies to help the people that live in different parts of the country.

As long as there aren’t intentions of de-escalating the tensions and conflicts, we struggle to have access.” What makes things even worse is that there are other potential conflicts that could exacerbate tensions even more.

  1. WWI was supposed to “…make the world safe for democracy…” and be “…the war to end all wars…” yet it’s said something like there has there been no war worldwide for only eight years in recorded history. Organizations like the United Nations and countries that have not experienced war first-hand; or for a very long time, have to get together and try to find ways to stop current wars and prevent future ones. It ‘s disgusting that after two major world wars; I and II, little or nothing has been done to stop wars since, like America questionably being in Vietnam for something like 14 years, and later again questionably twice in Iraq and then in Afghanistan hunting OBL but which lasted for about two decades. Russia has now started a war in Ukraine so the nature of humanity itself can be called into question not criticizing those who were against war and have historically done what they could to stop it.
