1. The World Trade Center

Our last tragedy remains an open wound for many Americans and is still fresh in our collective memories, the tragic events on the morning of September 11, 2001. The story of the day when four coordinated terrorist attacks by 19 members of the militant Islamist terrorist group al-Qaeda would change America forever.

And while the 189 lives lost when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the west side of the Pentagon and the 44 lives lost when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville are beyond devastating, the World Trade Center would see 2,763 innocent people meet their tragic end. We will never forget.
