6. Indira Gandhi

Serving the 3rd prime minister of India and its first and only female prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi found herself embroiled in many conflicts in her two terms of office. She went to war with Pakistan in support of the independence movement and war of independence in East Pakistan, which resulted in an Indian victory and the creation of Bangladesh.

However, it would be her dealings with the country’s Sikh community that would be her undoing. When she tried to remove the Sikh Damdami Taksal leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers from the Golden Temple, the holiest Sikh shrine, led to two of her own Sikh bodyguards gunned her down.
