This was David Bowie’s final appearance at an event and in public before his death. The singer had been battling cancer for the past 18 months, despite the public and even most of his friends not knowing anything about it. He chose to battle the disease privately, and only close family and friends knew about it.
At the time this picture was taken, which was at the opening night of his musical Lazarus back in 2015, we didn’t know his cancer had already reached terminal status and that this would be his last public appearance. His final album, Blackstar, is riddled with references to death, and it seemed like the singer had come to terms with his imminent death, accepting it with the grace and humor most of us can only hope to have.
He passed away at 69 years old.
