5. Berlin – Germany
Straddling the banks of the Spree, which flows into the Havel (a tributary of the Elbe) in the western borough of Spandau, Berlin would emerge when it came under the rule of the Margraviate of Brandenburg, a major principality of the Holy Roman Empire, at the end of the 12th century. The first mention of the town of Berlin would be 1251, but that year would later be revised to 1237.
Germany itself wouldn’t become a unified nation until the fall of the Holy Roman Empire. After its collapse, a Confederation of 39 German-speaking states would form in 1815, and by 1871, they would establish the German Empire and name Berlin as its capital. Unfortunately, it would end up as the capital of Nazi Germany, so it was subjected to 363 air raids during the Second World War, which saw 80% of the city center destroyed.
