6. Beirut – Lebanon

Situated on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast, Beirut is known to have been inhabited for more than 5,000 years. The first mention of it as a settlement comes from diplomatic correspondence between the Egyptian administration and its representatives in Canaan and Amurru on clay tablets known as Amarna tablets.

It wouldn’t become an important seaport until it was granted the status of a Roman colony, the Colonia Julia Augusta Felix Berytus, in 14 BCE, eventually becoming famous for its school of law. A series of earthquakes rocked it before being almost destroyed by an earthquake followed by a tidal wave in 551 CE. The Muslims would arrive and start rebuilding it in 635, and it would change between Muslim and Christian rule until it became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1516.

These pics show man’s inhumanity. ‘Humanity’s inhumanity’! There will never be peace on earth…so stop saying it in your Christmas cards. It’s a joke.
