3. Lenticular Clouds

Also known as wave clouds, lenticular clouds are long, smooth formations that indicate high winds in the upper atmosphere. Usually forming over mountains and mountain ranges when the wind is forced upward as it reaches the mountain’s windward side.

Curling upward above the mountain, these winds form the lenticular cloud on the leeward side of the mountain crest. These cloud formations, while seemingly stationary, cause a localized low-pressure system to build upon the leeward side of the mountain, indicating a pending and large storm.
