1. The Patriot and the Disappearance of Theodosia Burr Alston

Theodosia Burr Alston was Aaron Burr’s daughter, the third vice president of the US. After her child’s death in 1812, she decided to leave South Carolina to visit her father in New York. So, on New Year’s Eve 1812, she climbed on board the schooner Patriot. It seems that the ship did leave the dock and headed north. But that’s all we know about the Patriot and those who boarded the ship.

The only fact is that the ship never made it to New York, leaving no trace of the crew or ship. According to some legends and theories, the pirates attacked the ship and forced the crew to walk the plank. Other theories suggest that the ship got involved in the War of 1812 and ended up sinking. Whatever the story, it’s unlikely that we will know the real fate of Theodosia Burr Alson and the Patriot.
